This setup walkthrough directs you through genuine device verification, cryptographic seed creation, and secure integration with the Ledger Live companion application across desktop and mobile platforms.

Begin by acquiring the genuine Ledger Live ecosystem client. Always check the browser address bar to verify you are downloading from the verified ledger domain. Avoid search engine sponsored ads that mimic legitimate software portals. Ledger Live serves as your safe hub to manage 5,500+ cryptocurrencies, monitor exchange rates, install dedicated blockchain applications, execute real-time staking operations, and review your overall asset allocation directly on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, or Android.

Connect your physical hardware device via the included USB cable. Select 'Set up as new device' and select an unguessable 4-to-8 digit PIN code directly on the device buttons. Your device will subsequently compute a 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase utilizing high-entropy True Random Number Generation (TRNG). Write each word down sequentially on your blank Recovery Sheet. Never take a digital photo, never save it in a password manager, and never type it into any keyboard or cloud document.

Unlike vulnerable consumer hardware relying on physical tamper-evident paper stickers, every authentic device uses sophisticated cryptographic attestation. During onboarding, Ledger Live queries your device with a secure cryptographic handshake. The proprietary operating system (BOLOS) signs this challenge within the Secure Element. A successful genuine check mathematically guarantees your device was manufactured by Ledger and has not been intercepted or cloned in transit.

Open the 'My Ledger' tab inside Ledger Live to install the specific blockchain applications required for your assets (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Cardano). Once installed, generate an account and click Receive. Always verify character-by-character that the recipient address on your computer screen exactly matches the address rendered on your physical hardware screen before approving inbound transfers.
No Ledger agent, support member, or decentralized application will ever request your 24-word recovery phrase. Anyone who asks is attempting to drain your funds.
Your recovery phrase should only ever be keyed into the physical buttons of your hardware device during a genuine restore operation—never into any app window.
Computer screens are susceptible to 'man-in-the-middle' clipboard hijacking. Always confirm recipient wallet addresses and gas parameters on the physical display.
